How to make your social media marketing work: A look at Instagram for small businesses
The social tool to connect, engage and inspire
Social media has become an indispensable tool for businesses of all sizes, but for small businesses, it can be a game-changer. Among the various platforms, Instagram stands out as a powerful visual marketing tool, offering an incredible opportunity to connect with your audience, build brand loyalty, and drive sales.
However, success on Instagram doesn’t happen by chance. It requires a strategic approach, creativity, and a genuine connection with your audience. In this post, we’ll explore how you can make your social media marketing really work for you, with a focus on getting the most out of Instagram.
I’ll save the tips on social media content planning, strategy and tech tools and content scheduling for another post! This one is more focused on the how and why.
1. Define your Instagram goals
Before you start posting, it’s key have a clear idea of what you want to achieve.
- Set Specific Goals: Are you aiming to increase brand awareness, drive traffic to your website, generate leads, or boost sales? Clearly define what success looks like for your business on Instagram.
- Align with Business Objectives: Ensure your Instagram goals align with your overall business objectives. For example, if you’re launching a new product, your goal might be to build excitement and drive pre-orders through Instagram.
- Track Progress: Use Instagram Insights and other analytics tools to track your progress. Regularly assess what’s working and adjust your strategy accordingly.
Pro tip: Setting SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) can help you stay focused and measure success effectively.
2. Craft a Compelling Brand Story
Your brand story is what makes you unique and memorable. It’s the narrative that ties together your mission, values, and what you offer.
- Consistent Visual Identity: Use a consistent colour palette, font style, and overall aesthetic in your posts to reinforce your brand identity. This makes your brand instantly recognisable.
Canva is a brilliant creative tool to build your brand kit and create templates for content such as testimonials, quotes, product posts reels and carousels. - Engaging Content: Share the story behind your brand—whether it’s the inspiration for your products, behind-the-scenes looks at your process, or the people who make your business special. Authenticity is key.
- Highlight User-Generated Content: Encourage your customers to share their experiences with your products or services and feature their content on your page. This not only adds credibility but also builds a community around your brand. Share these on Stories and save to your IG (Instagram) ‘Highlights’.
Quick win: Create an “About Us” highlight reel on your Instagram profile to tell your brand’s story and introduce your team.
3. Post with purpose and consistency
Consistency is crucial on Instagram. Posting regularly keeps your brand top of mind for your followers and helps you stay relevant.
- Create a Content Calendar: Plan your posts in advance, ensuring you have a good mix of content types (e.g., images, videos, Reels, Stories). This helps you stay organised and ensures that you’re posting consistently.
- Quality Over Quantity: It’s better to post less frequently with high-quality, engaging content than to post often with content that doesn’t resonate with your audience.
- Optimise Post Timing: Use Instagram Insights to determine when your audience is most active and schedule your posts accordingly for maximum engagement.
Pro tip: Use scheduling tools like Later (a favourite of mine) or Buffer to plan and automate your posts, freeing up time to focus on other aspects of your business.
4. Leverage Instagram Stories and Reels
Instagram Stories and Reels offer a more informal, behind-the-scenes look at your brand, which can be incredibly engaging.
- Use Stories for Real-Time Engagement: Post regularly to your Stories with content that is more immediate or temporary, such as flash sales, Q&A sessions, or daily updates.
Use interactive features like polls, quizzes, and question stickers to engage your audience. - Create Reels to Showcase Your Creativity: Reels are a fantastic way to reach new audiences. Create short, entertaining videos that showcase your products, share tips, or highlight customer testimonials.
Use music and trending audio for your reels or carousel posts to boost your post.
IG launched a new feature where you can now upload photos and instead of designing captions in Canva to overlay on your visual, you can now do it on each picture within the Instagram app. Game changer! - Highlight Stories: Use the highlight feature to keep your best Stories accessible on your profile, categorising them into themes like ‘Reviews’ ‘Drinks’ ‘Lunch’ (if you’re a restaurant) or ‘Product Demos’, ‘Customer Reviews’, or ‘Behind the Scenes’ if you’re a product business.
Quick win: Don’t forget to add captions to your Stories and Reels, as many users watch them without sound.
5. Engage, don’t just broadcast
Social media is meant to be social.
Engagement is just as important, if not more so, than the content you post.
- Respond to Comments and DMs: Take the time to reply to comments on your posts and direct messages. This personal interaction builds relationships and can turn followers into loyal customers.
- Engage with Other Accounts: Don’t just focus on your own content.
Like, comment, and share posts from other accounts in your industry or community. This can increase your visibility and attract new followers. - Host Giveaways and Contests: Encourage engagement by hosting competitions or giveaways that require users to comment, tag friends, or share your content. This can significantly boost your reach and engagement.
Pro tip: Use Instagram’s algorithm to your advantage by encouraging your followers to save your posts, as this is a key metric for Instagram’s content ranking.
6. Utilise hashtags wisely
Hashtags are a powerful tool for reaching a broader audience, but they need to be used strategically. But, SEO in your captions is key. Hashtags aren’t so important now.
- Research Relevant Hashtags: Use hashtags that are relevant to your industry, products, and target audience.
Top tip: Mix popular hashtags with more niche ones to maximise your reach. - Create a Branded Hashtag: Encourage your followers to use your branded hashtag when they post about your products. This can help build a community and make it easier for you to find user-generated content.
- Avoid Overloading: Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post, but using too many can look spammy. Aim for around 5-10 well-chosen hashtags.
Quick win: Regularly review your hashtag strategy using tools like Hashtagify or Instagram’s own Insights to see which ones are driving the most engagement.
